Installation must follow the instructions for the exact Heatizon GutterMelt® product being used. Start with official manufacturer documentation rather than a generic cable layout.
Watch the 7-Step Installation Overview
See the process from removing old heat cable and planning your layout to choosing power, calculating zigzags, setting clips and laying cable. This silent illustrated overview is not a substitute or replacement for the installation manual. Read and follow the complete instructions for your exact product before starting.
Before Installation
- Confirm the product model and read its complete installation instructions.
- Verify the intended application, layout, and required components.
- Check electrical supply, protection, controls, and code requirements with qualified personnel.
- Inspect the work area and plan safe access to the roof and gutters.
- Confirm that the installation conditions and materials are allowed by the manufacturer.
Safety Comes First
Roof and ladder work can cause serious injury. Avoid working on icy, wet, or windy roofs and use qualified professionals when safe access is uncertain. Electrical heating products must be installed and connected as specified by the manufacturer and applicable electrical codes. Never modify, cut, overlap, or route cable contrary to the product instructions.
Installation Details That Matter
| Stage | Manufacturer guidance |
|---|---|
| Before handling | Disconnect power to the cable and its activators. Installation must be performed by qualified persons familiar with the system and hazards. |
| Roof clips | For the standing-seam adhesive attachment described on page 8, attach clips and allow adhesive to cure before threading cable through them. Select attachment for the actual roof material. |
| Cable routing | Use the specified roof clips and downspout supports. The manual lists a 1-inch bend radius, 2-inch minimum spacing and 18–24-inch standard eave spacing; apply the full layout instructions. |
| Electrical checks | Match the cable design voltage to the supply, ground the braid and provide required ground-fault protection. Verify circuit and control capacity. |
| Testing and handoff | Record manufacturer-required insulation-resistance and continuity checks before and after installation and before energizing. Retain test records, labels, operating instructions and warranty registration. |
The manual specifies a 2500 VDC megohmmeter and a 20-megohm insulation-resistance threshold. Testing and any repair belong with qualified personnel following the complete manufacturer procedure; do not energize damaged cable. Annual maintenance includes clearing debris, inspection and insulation-resistance testing.
