GutterMelt SR: At a Glance
GutterMelt SR is Heatizon Systems’ self-regulating heat trace cable for roof, gutter and downspout drainage paths. It is also commonly called roof heat tape. We provide nationwide design consultations and estimates, with installation throughout the Wasatch Front and surrounding communities confirmed by location and scope.

GutterMelt self-regulating heat cable helps maintain meltwater drainage paths along roof edges, through gutters and down downspouts. Manufactured by Heatizon Systems, it combines locally responsive heating with cable output choices and system components that can be selected for your property. Our team helps you plan the complete system and request an estimate.

We’ve Worked With Many Heat Cables. We Choose GutterMelt.
Over 28 years of experience. Thousands of projects. Millions of feet of cable installed.
Our team has worked with many self-regulating heat cable products. That experience has shaped what we look for: protective construction, appropriate heating output, dependable connections and a system that fits the property.
We believe GutterMelt is the best self-regulating cable choice for the roof and gutter systems we design and install. Here’s why we recommend it:
✓ Layered protection: a UV-resistant outer jacket, tinned-copper grounding braid and insulated heating core.
✓ Output options that fit the project: 5, 9 and 12 W/ft choices let us balance heating requirements with circuit capacity.
✓ Locally responsive heating: self-regulating technology adjusts heat output along the cable as conditions change.
✓ A complete system approach: compatible mounting, connections, supports and controls selected for the installation.
✓ A 10-year limited manufacturer warranty: documented coverage that supports your investment.
The right cable deserves the right design. We bring product experience and careful planning together to recommend a GutterMelt system for your property.
What Is GutterMelt Self-Regulating Cable?
The self-regulating, or SR, cable uses a conductive polymer heating core supplied by parallel conductors. Cooler sections produce more heat; warmer sections reduce their output. That local response is useful where one cable route encounters snow, meltwater, shade and exposed sections. An energized SR cable still uses electricity, so suitable controls remain part of the design.
GutterMelt is a broader Heatizon product family; this page focuses on its self-regulating roof and gutter cable. For a technology comparison, read our Heat Cable and Heat Tape Guide.
Where Is GutterMelt Used?
- Roof eaves and valleys: selected channels that lead meltwater toward drainage outlets.
- Gutters: drainage paths that carry water away from heated roof-edge sections.
- Downspouts: continuity from the gutter toward the discharge point, with appropriate cable support.
- Homes, commercial properties and HOAs: layouts selected for the roof materials, site access and electrical supply.
Heat cable maintains designated drainage paths; it does not clear the entire roof of snow or repair roofing, insulation or ventilation problems. Product compatibility and mounting must be confirmed for the actual surface.
Factory Plug-In Kits or Project-Specific Bulk Cable?
| Configuration | How it fits a project |
|---|---|
| Factory plug-in kits | Fixed-length 120V GutterMelt kits use factory-connected components. Select a supplied length that fits the approved layout; do not cut or alter a factory kit. |
| Bulk self-regulating cable | Allows project-specific cable runs within manufacturer circuit limits, using approved power connections, end seals, supports and controls. A spool is not a complete installed system. |
Our team can help identify the right configuration. Collect your roof, gutter and downspout measurements; if you do not know the dimensions or voltage yet, start with photos and a description of the problem.
What Do 5W, 9W and 12W Mean?
GutterMelt SR5, SR9 and SR12 bulk cable options are rated at 5, 9 and 12 watts per foot at 32°F in ice/water. These are output choices, not quality grades. Lower output can allow longer circuits where it meets the heating demand; higher output provides more heat per foot with corresponding circuit requirements.
Compare cable ratings under matching temperature, moisture and voltage conditions. Use the supplied model’s instructions for circuit limits and startup conditions. See our Heat Cable Guide for the output comparison and documented circuit-length example.
What Does a Complete System Need?
- Cable output and length matched to the complete drainage route.
- Compatible roof clips, gutter attachments and downspout supports.
- Approved power connections, end seals and any required junction components.
- A verified electrical supply, circuit capacity and required ground-fault protection.
- Suitable temperature/moisture controls or other approved operating controls.
- Manufacturer-required installation checks, testing and operating instructions.
ETL Listing and the 10-Year Limited Warranty
Intertek’s directory identifies the Heatizon GR5, GR9 and GR12 model families for listed heat-tracing and roof-and-gutter applications. Confirm the exact supplied model, listing mark, approved configuration and instructions; the listing applies to the product and does not approve every proposed installation. Read the model-specific listing explanation and source.
GutterMelt cable is backed by a 10-year limited manufacturer warranty, subject to its coverage, registration requirements and exclusions. Installation workmanship coverage follows the written installation agreement. Read the warranty terms and claim process.
